Dallas hit-and-run cases
Hit-and-run accident help from a Dallas trial lawyer
A hit-and-run leaves you hurt and with no one to hold responsible, at least at first. It can happen anywhere in Dallas: an intersection on Northwest Highway, a crosswalk in Oak Lawn, a shoulder on I-30.
You may still have a path to recovery. Nolan works quickly to find video and witnesses that can identify the driver, and he looks at your own insurance, which may cover you even if the driver is never found.

Your coverage
How uninsured motorist coverage works after a hit-and-run
Texas auto insurers must offer UM/UIM coverage and PIP, and both are part of your policy unless you rejected them in writing. Many people have this coverage and do not know it.
UM for unknown drivers
UM can apply when the at-fault driver cannot be identified. Policies often require actual physical contact with the other vehicle and prompt reporting to police and your insurer. Read your policy, or let Nolan read it with you.
PIP regardless of fault
PIP can help with medical bills and lost income regardless of fault, with at least $2,500 in coverage.
Walking or on a bike
Some serious Dallas hit-and-runs involve people walking or biking, on streets like Northwest Highway, Ross Avenue and Jefferson Boulevard. Your own policy's UM and PIP, or a household member's policy, may apply depending on the terms.
Fast evidence work
An injured pedestrian or cyclist may not see the vehicle, so video and witnesses carry more weight. If the driver is identified later, a claim can be made against their insurer, and the case may be filed in Dallas County courts.
Your own insurer
Your insurance company is not on your side here
A UM claim is a claim against your own insurer, but that does not mean the process is friendly.
In the fleeing driver's shoes
In a UM claim, your insurer steps into the shoes of the driver who fled.
Expect questions
It may question how the crash happened, whether there was contact and how badly you were hurt.
Prompt notice, with care
Give your insurer prompt notice, as your policy requires, but be careful with recorded statements and broad medical authorizations.
Let Nolan handle it
Nolan can handle that communication so your claim is documented correctly from the start.
Finding the driver
How a fleeing driver can be identified
Traffic and business video
Gas stations, stores and apartment complexes often have cameras that catch the vehicle or the plate.
Doorbell and dashcam footage
Nearby homes and other drivers may have recorded the crash or the car leaving.
Witnesses
People who stopped to help may remember the make, color or direction of travel.
Vehicle debris
Broken parts left at the scene can sometimes point to a specific make and model.
Police investigation
Dallas police may follow up on leads, and the report number ties everything together.
Time matters
Why video has to be found fast
Many business and home camera systems record over old footage on a rolling basis, sometimes within days. Once it is gone, it is usually gone for good.
Disappearing video is the main reason to act quickly after a hit-and-run.
Canvassing the area
Nolan canvasses the area around the crash and identifies cameras that may have captured the vehicle.
Written preservation requests
He sends written requests to preserve the footage. If the driver is found, a claim can be made against their insurance as well.
Traffic cameras
Traffic cameras are not always recording, and when they are, footage may be kept only for a short time.
Private cameras first
Private cameras are often the better source, which is why the search starts with the businesses and homes closest to the crash.

Right after a hit-and-run
What to do if the other driver flees
- Call 911 and report the crash right away. Don't chase the driver.
- Write down anything you remember about the car: color, make, plate, damage, direction.
- Look around for cameras on nearby businesses, homes and traffic poles.
- Get names and phone numbers of witnesses before they leave.
- Photograph the scene, debris and your injuries.
- Notify your own insurance company promptly.
Report quickly and protect your coverage
UM policies often require prompt reporting to police and to your insurer after a hit-and-run. A delay can give the insurer a reason to dispute the claim. Texas personal injury claims also generally must be filed within two years.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I recover if the hit-and-run driver is never found?
Possibly. Your own uninsured motorist coverage may pay if the driver cannot be identified, as long as you meet the policy's conditions. PIP can also help with medical bills and lost income.
What happens if my insurer and I disagree on the value?
A UM claim is still a claim for money, and your insurer may value it lower than you do. If the two sides can't agree, the dispute can end up in a lawsuit against your own insurer. Nolan prepares the claim with that possibility in mind.
What if I was walking or on a bike when I was hit?
Your own auto policy's UM coverage and PIP may still apply, depending on the policy terms. A household member's policy may also help. Nolan can review the policies with you.
Do I have to report a hit-and-run to police?
You should, right away. A police report helps the investigation, and UM policies often require prompt reporting as a condition of coverage.
What if the driver is found later?
Then a claim can be made against that driver and their insurer. If their coverage is too small, your own UIM coverage may help make up the difference.
Is leaving the scene a crime in Texas?
Yes. Texas law requires drivers in crashes involving injury to stop, give their information and give reasonable help. The criminal case is separate from your civil claim for compensation.
What if there was no contact between the cars?
Many UM policies require actual physical contact for an unidentified driver claim. Cases where a driver ran you off the road without contact are harder, and the exact policy language matters.
How long do I have to file a claim?
Lawsuits generally must be filed within two years, but your insurance policy may require notice much sooner. Report the crash and notify your insurer as soon as you can.
